Austin Water Utility Worker Killed In Tragic On-The-Job Accident

March 13, 2012

The Austin Metro Police Department (AMPD) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are continuing their investigation into the mysterious death of an Austin Water Utility worker who was killed in an on-the-job accident two weeks ago. According to reports from YNN News, the accident occurred March 2 at 3 p.m. on Barton Hills Drive, near Farnswood Circle.

A spokesman for Austin Water Utilities, Jason Hill, said that the 51-year-old worker—a 22 year veteran of the department—was in the area replacing and updating service lines to neighborhood homes when the accident occurred. The only other details being released specify that the accident involved a backhoe at the worksite.

The worker was laid to rest on Friday while investigators still work to iron out the details of what happened that afternoon. Hill stated that, in the meantime, the AMPD’s main priority now is to console and comfort the family of the victim and other workers who knew him as well.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, operating heavy construction equipment can be dangerous, and workers in this occupation incur injuries and illnesses at a higher-than-average rate.

The Austin Wrongful Death Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers would like to send their thoughts and condolences to the family of the victim who tragically died. The firm would also like to send their thoughts to the victim’s numerous co-workers who knew him as well.

Workplace Illness And Injury On The Decline In Texas

December 27, 2011

Injuries and illness in the workplace are on the decline. According to KVUE News, employers in private industries reported a 5.8 percent decrease in the number of non-fatal cases resulting in absence from work in 2010, resulting in a total of 56,720 incidents for the year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in cooperation with the Texas Department of Insurance-Division of Workers’ Compensation (TDI-DWC), conducted the survey in order to better inform and assist employers with identifying possible health and safety risks in the workplace.

The study found that 79.5 injuries or illnesses were reported per 10,000 full-time employees across the state of Texas. The average number of days on the job missed because of these injuries and illnesses  increased to nine days this year, a slow-but-steady rise from the eight days reported in the previous two years.

The TDI-DWC plans to continue fighting the problem by offering programs such as:

  • Free safety and health consultations on Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
  • Regional and on-site safety training
  • Free safety and health publications
  • Guidance on return-to-work and drug-free workplace programs
  • A Safety Violations Hotline

Arlington Billboard Worker Falls to His Death

August 16, 2011

A man hanging a billboard in Arlington, Texas, fell to his death on Monday afternoon. According to a report by News Channel 25, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as a 40-year-old man from Boyd, Texas.

The man was on the billboard near Cowboys Stadium midday Monday when he suddenly lost his footing and slipped, falling approximately 30 feet before hitting the ground. Witnesses immediately called 911, and rescue workers transported the man to Arlington Hospital; however, it was too late for the man by the time they arrived and he was declared dead.

Investigators with several agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), are looking into the incident to determine whether the worker was wearing a safety harness at the time of the accident, and if he was, whether it was properly attached.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an all time high for fatalities resulting from falls while on the job in 2007, with a total of 847 deaths. The US Department of Labor named falls as one of the leading causes of traumatic death on the job, accounting for 8% of all reported worker deaths.

Texas construction accident involves man’s leg, jackhammer

February 24, 2011

Jackhammers can be many things to many people: for residents living next to a construction site, they can be an unwelcome wakeup call, but for construction workers, they can be a hazard.

According to KHOU, a man suffered a minor Texas construction accident injury when his thigh became lodged in a jackhammer.

The Texas construction accident occurred when the man rested the equipment against his leg while at a construction site. When he shut off the 45-pound jackhammer, it pinched his thigh and emergency services had to be called in to remove the jackhammer from his leg.
