Austin Police Reduce Accidents And Tickets Through Saturation Patrols

February 28, 2012

The Austin Police Department (APD) has been reducing the number of car accidents in the city by using a technique known as saturation patrols near the area’s most prominent accident locations. According to reports from KXAN News, the APD announced last week that car crashes in the city have declined by 11% in 2011.

A spokesman for the APD Highway Enforcement Command, Lt. Ely Reyes, said that focusing on certain dangerous locations across the city has reduced the overall number of citations written by officers as well. He estimates that APD officers wrote 50,000 fewer tickets in 2011 than they did in the previous year. The number of traffic citations also saw a considerable decrease over the year, dropping from 224,661 in 2010 to 165,757 in 2011.

Reyes concluded by saying, “Any time you have concentrated enforcement efforts, compliance always comes along with that.”

Officers will continue to patrol in “designated danger zones” such as Slaughter Lane near I-35, which saw 21 crashes in the past year, making it the most dangerous roadway in the city. The second most dangerous location in Austin according to number of accidents is the intersection of Congress Avenue and Cesar Chavez Boulevard with 20 crashes between 2010 and 2011.

Tow Truck Accident Kills Young Girl, Injures Mother And Sister

June 14, 2011

An accident on the Sam Rayburn Toll-way in Denton County, involving a tow truck and a disabled car, killed a young girl and seriously injured her mother and sister late last Wednesday.

According to The Dallas Morning News, around 9:30 PM, the mother was driving a silver Dodge Sedan southbound on the toll-way, near Spring Creek Parkway, when the car began to have mechanical problems. She pulled the car into the center lane of the three-lane parkway when the tow truck suddenly struck her from behind. The impact of the crash killed the girl who had just turned nine-years-old two weeks earlier. The mother and sister of the young girl sustained non-life threatening injuries, and were transported to the local hospital to be treated.

The article states that the speed limit is 55 miles per hour along this stretch of road that is notoriously dim from poor spacing in the streetlights. Large vehicles, like a tow truck, weigh significantly more than a small car. This means it will take them longer to slow down and will have an impact sometimes ten times more intense than that of a small sedan. This is why accidents involving large trucks are often times so deadly.

Two Dead After Bryan-College Station Airplane Crash

June 7, 2011

Two people died after a small engine aircraft crashed on May 28, 2011, outside of Bryan-College Station, Texas. Velozia Air reports that the Rockwell Commander 112 left Dallas at 7:23 PM en route to Galveston, Texas. About halfway into the trip, air traffic control received a call from the pilot declaring a fuel emergency, at which point the plane was diverted to an airfield near Bryan-College Station. There were two other air fields that were closer, but for some unknown reason, the pilot choose to go to this particular site. The plane unfortunately did not make it to its destination and crashed in the parking lot of an apartment complex, killing both the pilot and the plane’s passenger.

The plane was severely damaged with the fuselage crushed into the wings and the planes instrument panels pushed through the seats. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, but it is speculated from conversations the pilot had with air traffic control that a fuel leak developed which led to the crash.

Dallas Hospital Under Investigation Following Two Patient Deaths

May 31, 2011

A Dallas, Texas, hospital is being investigated following the deaths of two patients who were admitted to the psychiatric ward of the facility. The nonprofit, Chicago-based Joint Commission, the nation’s leading authority on patient safety in hospitals, is heading up the inquiry against Parkland Memorial Hospital.

The commission, according to the Dallas Morning News, is looking into the circumstances that caused the death of a psychiatric patient locked in solitary confinement, and another psychiatric patient who fled from the hospital and was hit by a car in traffic.

The commission just closed a case with Parkland where a third psychiatric patient died of a heart attack shortly after being released with no medical examination in February 2010.

A case of a botched surgery leading to an amputation is also under an open investigation with the commission.

Dr. Al Herzog a Connecticut psychiatrist and former chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s patient safety committee feels steps should be taken to ensure that a patient’s wellbeing is monitored closely. He was quoted as saying, “To have three deaths in that time frame, you want to take a close look and make sure you’re taking really good measures to protect patients.”

Parkland Memorial spokespeople declined comment siting patient confidentiality rules.

Did the hospital fail to provide proper monitoring of patients in their care?

Houston Man Sues After Suffering Stroke Caused By Baseball Equipment

May 24, 2011

A Houston man has filed suit against the makers of baseball umpire’s chest protector he was wearing that he claims caused him to have a stroke. The Southeast Texas Record is reporting  that the man claims the Diamond Baseball Co.’s equipment shifted up on his neck as he was driving home from a little league game he had just umpired. When the chest piece shifted up, it severed the right internal carotid artery. The man did not realize the internal injury had occurred and suffered from nausea and headaches when he arrived home. The extent of the damage caused was not discovered until the next morning when the man’s wife found him incapacitated on the couch and unable to move his left side. He was then transported to a local hospital where he was diagnosed with a right middle cerebral artery infarction.

Court documents claim that the cut caused an immediate stroke that has left the man permanently disabled, suffering from left hemi-paresis, executive functioning disorder, bouts of fecal and urinary incontinence, seizures, aphasia, and cognitive deficit.

The man is seeking over $75,000 in damages

Waco auto accident sends woman to hospital

May 19, 2011

When a driver runs a red light, their main concern may be that an officer might pull them over and issue them a citation. What the driver really should be concerned with is the potential danger he or she brings to occupants of the vehicle and other people on the road.

A Waco auto accident has sent one woman to the hospital after a Dodge Ram 1500 ran a red light at Sanger Avenue and Richland Drive, according to KWTX.

The Waco auto accident sent the woman to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and stalled traffic at the intersection.

Auto Accident Kills One and Injures One In Georgetown, Texas

May 17, 2011

An auto accident left one young man dead and another seriously injured after the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a home in Georgetown, Texas. The Statesman reports that the accident occurred when the driver of the two-door convertible lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the home around 7:00 AM on March 30, 2011.

The article quotes a police officer as saying “The vehicle left the roadway, struck a privacy fence and a rock column, and then hit the rear corner of the house in the 900 block of Boquilla Trail.”

The passenger was killed, and the driver is in critical condition. The occupants of the house were not injured in the accident, although they sustained property damage to their fence and home. The officer stated that speed was a factor in the accident.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that speed plays a factor in one third of all fatal accidents. Many times, the driver of a vehicle involved with a high-speed fatal accident can be found at fault for injuries or wrongful deaths of others involved.

Cars in danger after Waco auto accident

May 12, 2011

We often hear of vehicles crashing into stationary objects such as walls, road barriers, other parked vehicles, and utility poles; but it’s uncommon that the victims of an auto accident face the danger of live wires on their vehicle. Would you know the safety procedure to follow if a live wire fell on your vehicle?

According to KCEN, some drivers were dealing with this problem after a Waco auto accident on Waco Drive.

The Waco auto accident occurred when a truck brushed the wires, knocked them down, and caused a Waco auto accident that stalled traffic.

The four cars behind the truck could not react in time to avoid the Waco truck accident, leaving them caught in live wires.

It’s always a good idea to take extra precautions when farm equipment or other large vehicles are on the road. Drivers may become frustrated because tractors move slower than traffic. However, one tractor being hauled, not driven, killed a man in a Texas truck accident.

According to KWTX, a man driving a pickup truck died when his vehicle clipped the tire of a tractor being hauled on a truck, causing the Texas truck accident on Heritage Parkway.

Waco truck accident results in no injuries

April 28, 2011

Even if no one is injured in an auto accident, the crash can still have many effects, including blocking roads and halting traffic.

According to KWTX, a Waco truck accident caused Interstate 35 to be blocked after the scene had to be cleared of the Waco truck accident’s debris.

The Waco truck accident occurred when a driver tried to avoid a car that was stalled on the shoulder of the road near Brazos River Bridge, lost control, and hit a barrier before returning to traffic and striking a truck.

The truck was carrying wood pallets and cardboard, which spilled onto Interstate 35, blocking the road following the Waco truck accident, but no one was injured.
