May 16, 2012

A Waco, Texas, woman driving a white Cadillac was injured in a wreck involving three other cars on Tuesday, May 8.

KWTX reports that the woman was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but details of her injuries have not been released. The other three motorists were not injured in the collision.

Police told the news station that around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday one of the drivers didn’t stop at a stop sign, which caused a pickup truck and another car to crash. The other two drivers were involved in separate fender benders while trying to avoid the initial crash. KWTX footage shows the Cadillac being towed away from the accident scene at the intersection of Bosque Boulevard and Melrose Street.

A study previously conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that about 70 percent of all crashes occur at stop signs. In most cases, drivers younger than 18 or older than 65 were found to be at fault in stop sign violations.

The Texas Car Accident Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers encourage Texas drivers to be vigilant of stop signs, and we wish the injured woman a speedy recovery. We want to remind Texas drivers that failing to stop or yield at a stop sign puts pedestrians and other motorists in grave danger.

May 8, 2012

One person is dead and another was seriously injured after being involved in a hit-and-run accident near a popular Austin, Texas, hiking and biking trail yesterday afternoon. According to KVUE News, the accident occurred around 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of West Cesar Chavez Avenue and South Lamar Boulevard.

Austin Metro Police say that the 21-year-old driver lost control of his car, jumped the curb, and ran into the 81-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman who were walking on the trail. The elderly man died a short time after arriving at the hospital. The woman involved remains in stable condition at a local hospital.

Doctors say that the woman suffered several serious injuries in the crash. She will need to have a rod and plate implanted in her leg and will also require a screw in her shoulder to help heal shattered bones.

The driver responsible for the crash remains in custody and faces two felony charges of manslaughter and failure to render aid. Since the man was on probation at the time of the accident, he may face other charges as well.

A Texas Car Accident can change your life in a split second.
Statistics show that a lack of seat belts or proper restraints is a factor in a large majority of fatal motor vehicle accidents.

May 1, 2012

Statistics show that a lack of seat belts or proper restraints is a factor in a large majority of fatal motor vehicle accidents. In an effort to reduce these types of accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation and law enforcement statewide will partner to conduct the 11th annual “Click It Or Ticket” campaign from May 21 to June 3.

To promote the event, a news conference is being held at Auditorium Shores on the banks of Lady Bird Lake today by Austin officials. The program’s aim is to promote awareness of the law that requires passengers in a vehicle to be buckled up at all times. The law also states that every child under the age of 8 is required to be restrained in either a child safety or booster seat. Failure to abide by these laws is punishable by a fine of up to $250.

Research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that the increased usage of seat belts on roadways in Texas over the last ten years—which has been attributed to the campaign—has saved an estimated 2,483 lives.

Texas Car Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time, even if you are the most cautious of drivers. That’s why the Austin, Bryan, and Waco Personal Injury Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers ask that drivers always buckle up before driving and ask that all passengers do the same.

A recent study has shown that electrocution is the cause of a significant number of on-the-job deaths in the United States. In fact, it is the fifth leading cause of occupational injury death today.

April 24, 2012

A recent study has shown that electrocution causes a significant number of on-the-job deaths in the United States. In fact, it’s the fifth leading cause of occupational injury deaths. The accidents have been determined to happen almost exclusively to men, with a large majority occurring in the south as weather begins to warm.

An accident Tuesday left a man hospitalized after he suffered an electric shock in McLennan County, Texas. Channel 25 News reports that the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Wolf Creek Road, about two miles outside the town of Lorena. Officers with the local police department say that the man was working on top of a shed at a local residence when he accidentally made contact with a live electrical wire dangling from above. Rescue crews were called to the scene, but The Heart of Texas Electrical Company had to shut power to the line off before paramedics could approach the man to load him onto a stretcher.

He has been taken to a local hospital to be examined for further injuries.

Common injuries resulting from an accident such as this include:

mild to severe burns,

cardiac and respiratory arrest,

and cognitive and neurological damage.

The Texas Burn Injury Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers specialize in electrical injuries and say that the most important thing to do if you or someone you know is electrocuted is to seek medical attention immediately by calling 911.

April 17, 2012

With the weather warming up, children are flocking to local pools. However, swimming carries many dangers, and Safe Kids USA estimates that 745 children died from drowning in 2008 alone.

KVUE News reports that a 3-year-old Austin child suffered critical injuries around 3:00 p.m. Saturday at a backyard pool off of Lost Creek Boulevard. Reports indicate that the child was rushed to Dell Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The Texas Brain Injury Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers say that brain damage is the most common type of injury that results from drowning and near-drowning accidents due to a lack of oxygen making it to the brain. Brain injuries also are common in diving accidents due to the impact of the head hitting the bottom of the pool. They suggest these tips to help prevent such accidents:

Install fencing at least four feet high around the pool area.

Make sure the gate is locked when the pool is not in use.

Install a pool alarm to alert you if someone falls in.

Remove all toys from the pool area.

Never leave a pool cover partially open.

Adhere to diving rules.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is also working to battle this problem by promoting a campaign called Pool Safely. The agency says the campaign educates both children and adults on what they can do to stay safe and save lives near pools and other bodies of water.

The FDA may soon force manufacturers of tobacco products to list any additives on the outside packaging of a pack of cigarettes.

April 10, 2012

Cigarettes are known to contain preservatives and harmful chemicals. Yet manufacturers of tobacco products aren’t required to list those chemicals. Instead, the manufacturers are only required to provide a warning that the product may cause cancer and other health problems.

However, that could change if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passes new guidelines for the tobacco industry. According to KVUE News, the FDA is considering forcing manufacturers of tobacco products to list any additives on the outside packaging of a pack of cigarettes.

Dr. Lawrence Deyton, director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, told reporters that “cigarettes are the only mass-consumed product in this country for which consumers don’t know what’s in them, until now.”

The agency made the announcement Friday, adding that cigarettes contain more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco products, and that at least 93 of them are harmful to a person’s health. The change will be implemented next year.

The move comes after a 2009 law change gave the FDA a large share of power when it comes to controlling the marketing and manufacturing of tobacco products and is being seen as a first step in tighter regulation of the industry as alternative tobacco products have begun to emerge.

The Texas Defective Product Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers hope that the new warnings will deter people from picking up the habit of smoking and will encourage current smokers to stop.

A drunk driver is responsible for a fatal two-vehicle crash Saturday that occurred on the north side of Austin, Texas.

April 3, 2012

A drunk driver is responsible for a fatal two-vehicle crash Saturday that occurred on the north side of Austin, Texas. Reports from KVUE News indicate that the accident happened around 7:00 a.m. at the intersection of northbound MoPac frontage road and Steck Avenue.

Reports from officers with the Austin Metro Police Department who responded to the scene say that the 20-year-old driver of a Chevrolet pickup was driving at a high rate of speed when he blew through a red light and struck a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by a 57-year-old Austin man. The driver of the F-150 died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Chevy pickup truck was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment of minor injuries. It was there that staff noticed a smell of alcohol on his breath. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the man had a blood alcohol content of .19 percent, more than double the legal limit of .08 percent.

The intoxicated driver was placed under arrest and now faces charges of intoxicated manslaughter.

This was the 17th fatal traffic accident this year in Austin.

That is why the Texas Car Accident Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers ask that we all do our part to reduce this number and make Texas’ highways safe for all by not drinking and driving. Instead, call a cab or friend to get you home safely.

A motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after an accident in Austin, Texas, yesterday.

March 27, 2012

A motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after an accident in Austin, Texas, yesterday. According to reports from KVUE News, the crash happened just after noon on the Loop 360 Bridge above northbound MoPac, at the Capitol of Texas Highway.

The man was crossing over the bridge when he lost control of the bike and hit the wall. The impact threw him over the barrier and onto the highway 40 feet below. Although he was wearing a helmet, he suffered severe head injuries; however, he was last listed in good condition at a local hospital.

Another motorcycle rider was not so lucky when he was involved in a crash Sunday evening. KVUE News reports that around 11:00 p.m., a motorcyclist was traveling north on Highway 29 when his bike went off the road for unknown reasons and crashed. The driver was thrown from the bike and died at the scene. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash.

In an effort to decrease the number of fatal motorcycle crashes, the Texas Department of Transportation has begun a campaign called LookLearnLive, which works to educate the public on motorcycle safety awareness.

The Texas Motorcycle Accident Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers ask that all bikers stay safe by always wearing a helmet and obeying the posted speed limits. Following these tips and driving defensively should significantly decrease your chances of being injured or killed in an accident.

Walden added that many women undergo these “underground” procedures because of their price and a lack of awareness of the dangers they pose.

Dr. Walden says women need to focus on the three P’s of cosmetic procedures:

Product—Make sure the product being used is FDA-approved.

Practitioner—Make sure the person performing the procedure is properly educated and licensed and certified.

Place—Only have procedures done at medical facilities.

Dr. Walden stated that your best defense against a botched medical procedure is to ask questions and become informed before going under the knife.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recently launched a campaign called The Safety and Awareness Campaign Against Deceptive Practices to improve safety and public awareness. The campaign discusses the dangers of surgery by unqualified practitioners, as well as the difference between being licensed to practice cosmetic surgery and being certified to practice it.

March 13, 2012

The Austin Metro Police Department (AMPD) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are continuing their investigation into the mysterious death of an Austin Water Utility worker who was killed in an on-the-job accident two weeks ago. According to reports from YNN News, the accident occurred March 2 at 3 p.m. on Barton Hills Drive, near Farnswood Circle.

A spokesman for Austin Water Utilities, Jason Hill, said that the 51-year-old worker—a 22 year veteran of the department—was in the area replacing and updating service lines to neighborhood homes when the accident occurred. The only other details being released specify that the accident involved a backhoe at the worksite.

The worker was laid to rest on Friday while investigators still work to iron out the details of what happened that afternoon. Hill stated that, in the meantime, the AMPD’s main priority now is to console and comfort the family of the victim and other workers who knew him as well.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, operating heavy construction equipment can be dangerous, and workers in this occupation incur injuries and illnesses at a higher-than-average rate.

The Austin Wrongful Death Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers would like to send their thoughts and condolences to the family of the victim who tragically died. The firm would also like to send their thoughts to the victim’s numerous co-workers who knew him as well.
