The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has released its annual report on workplace fatalities that occurred last year and their causes. The Austin Construction Accident Lawyers with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers point out how the report found the construction industry saw an increase in the number of on-the–job deaths.
The BLS Fatality Report shows the nation saw the number of construction accident fatalities rise from the 2011 totals by as much as five percent. The increase means the construction industry is now responsible for as many as 18 percent of all workplace fatalities in the nation. In particular though, the number of transportation accidents at construction sites skyrocketed. Experts found that 42 workers lost their lives to transportation accidents in 2012, compared to the 22 that were killed the previous year. Some of the other most common causes of fatal workplace accidents include:
- Contact with Objects and Equipment
- Slips, Trips, and Falls
- Violence in the Workplace
- Exposure to Harmful Substances
- Fires and Explosions
Laborers saw a 10 percent increase in workplace fatalities last year, as did roofers, who saw a 17 percent increase in on-the-job deaths.
