Each year in Texas, around 90,000 people are arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and approximately 1,500 people die as a result of alcohol-related crashes.
One such Texas Car Accident occurred Sunday when an intoxicated motorist drove her vehicle, carrying two passengers, into nearby Lady Bird Lake. According to KENS 5 News, the accident happened just after 2:00 a.m. under the I-35 overpass, on the north shore of the water.
Officers stated that they saw the vehicle leaving Zilker Park and watched as the driver lost control of the vehicle while rounding the left turn. The vehicle then skid off the road and into the water. The vehicle landed upside down about 30 yards into the water.
Witnesses were able to help two of the crash victims to shore, but a 25-year-old man drowned as a result of the accident. The driver, a 25-year-old female, later told officers she thought that she was entering the highway in the moments leading up to the crash.
She was taken to the Travis County Jail where she was charged with intoxication manslaughter, as well as driving under the influence.
