The construction industry is booming in Texas. In fact, a study conducted by Forbes concluded that Houston has the most new construction happening of any metropolitan area in the U.S.
With so much construction in the works, it comes as no surprise that there are plenty of injuries. Reports indicate Texas construction accident fatality rates are the highest in the nation.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was designed to regulate workplace safety to reduce the number of accidents and to create a level of accountability that nurtures workplace safety. However, new reports indicate the agency may not be performing.
Local OSHA officials have stated the agency only has two dozen compliance officers in the region and simply doesn’t have the manpower to inspect every construction site. ABC 13 News reports it would take the agency 140 years to inspect every Texas construction site that hasn’t been checked to ensure safety. Furthermore, current laws aren’t stringent enough to persuade construction companies to focus on improving safety on the job.
