Hit and Run: What Do You Do?

There is one universal truth about car accidents: they can happen to anyone. It doesn’t matter how safe of a driver you are, chances are you’ll be in an accident at some point. There are just too many variables to consider when out on the road. A momentary lapse of concentration or the carelessness of another driver can put your life at risk and change it forever.

Because most of us will at some point in our lives be in an accident, it’s important to know what to do when it does happen. Most of us know to make sure everyone is okay, call the police, and get the information of the other driver. But what if there is no other driver? What if you’re the victim of a hit and run? What should you do then?

First of all, stay put. You may want to pursue the other vehicle, but don’t. There’s nothing to gain from chasing down the at-fault driver. Plus, leaving the scene of an accident is against the law, so stay put.

Second, call the police. Give the operator the best description you possibly can of the other vehicle and then wait for a police officer to arrive at the scene. He or she will advise you as to what you should do next.
