For some Texans, Labor Day is synonymous with breaking out the motorcycle for a cruise. People get caught up in the fun though, and forget to put safety first. Two separate motorcycle accidents in the Austin area over the holiday weekend have left three people dead and one in critical condition.
KVUE news reported the first accident happened Saturday night, around 10:20 PM, on Dee Gabriel Collins Road. A 59-year-old man and a woman lost control of the bike and crashed, killing the man and leaving the woman in critical condition. Authorities are unsure who was driving at the time of the crash, but have determined the man was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.
The second crash happened early this morning when a motorcycle and car collided, throwing the rider of the bike from the vehicle. The accident occurred around 3:00 AM on the MoPac Expressway, near RM 2222. Authorities shut down the northbound lanes of MoPac as they investigated. The roads have since reopened; however, authorities are continuing their investigation into the moments surrounding the crash.
The Texas Motorcycle Accident Attorneys with Daniel Stark Injury Lawyers say the best way to protect yourself from injury when on a motorcycle is to always wear a helmet. It has been proven by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that thousands of motorcyclists who perished in crashes could have been saved had they been wearing a helmet.
