For October, the Daniel Stark Team made their movie night a spooky one! The team went to see the 2017 remake of Stephen King’s “IT”. IT was made famous by Stephen King’s iconic novel and the 1990 TV miniseries, starring the great Tim Curry as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
This version of IT takes place between 1988-1989 and brings on full blown 80’s nostalgia, drawing comparison to the smash-hit Netflix Original Series “Stranger Things.” In the movie the group of friends known as “The Loser’s Club” take on a strange force that takes hold in the fictional Derry, Maine every 27 years. This results in the disappearance of many kids, and some adults, from the town. As the kids start to solve the mystery, they have to face their greatest fears.
The movie opens the same way as the book and the 1990 TV miniseries with the famous “gutter scene”, where six-year-old Georgie Denbrough encounters Pennywise in a street sewer gutter when his paper boat goes into it by mistake during a rain storm.
It is from this moment on that it’s clear why “IT” has its R-rating. Not only is Pennywise more menacing towards the children in this version, but it is significantly more violent. Be prepared for this if you plan to see it. Even more so, clowns are always scary anyway.
The team, overall, enjoyed the movie. There was no score lower than 4/5. There was great 80’s nostalgia, genuinely terrifying moments, and wonderful comedic relief as well. There is also some plot holes in the film, but do not distract too much from the overall enjoyment. If you’re looking to be scared this Halloween, “IT” is a great choice! After all, we all float down here.
